Flood Series

The Flood Series is a deeply personal body of work inspired by my harrowing experience during the 2013 Uttarakhand floods. Witnessing nature’s unbridled power left an indelible mark on me, and these works aim to capture both the chaos and beauty of that moment. This series is a visual narrative of destruction, resilience, and the complex emotions tied to witnessing a force beyond human control.

To create these pieces, I work with a range of unconventional materials that carry symbolic and textural weight. Cement, resin, and clay form the foundation, evoking the rugged landscapes shaped by water’s force. Stones, Indian coins, and broken brass temple items reflect the cultural and spiritual fragments left behind in the aftermath of floods, while moli (Hindu sacred thread) and rainwater lend a deeply spiritual and organic connection to the works. Plaster of Paris, marble dust, and other fine powders add layers of texture, mimicking sedimentation and the earth’s raw surface.

Through intricate layering, carving, and pouring techniques, I create highly textured surfaces that echo the erosion, sedimentation, and chaos left in the wake of floods. Each piece is built intuitively, with no predetermined path, allowing the materials to guide the process, much like water carves its own course. I often use bold strokes, contrasting tones, and fluid shapes to create a dynamic interplay between control and spontaneity, mirroring the unpredictable nature of floods.

The Flood Series is more than a collection of artworks—it is a testament to the resilience of life, the transformative power of nature, and the stories of survival and loss etched into the landscapes we inhabit. Through these pieces, I invite viewers to reflect on their relationship with nature and the fragility of human existence in the face of its immense power.
